Reid to speak at dinner
by Tom Martin

AN EVERTON F. C legend will appear in Thornton as part of a special event held at St William of York Parish Centre.

Peter Reid, who made 159 appearances for the Toffees between 1982-89, will be the guest speaker at the Sefton Central Labour Party annual dinner on Friday November, 22.

And the blue carpet will be rolled out for his arrival as local residents are expected to flock to the event to get a glimpse of their hero.

MP Bill Esterson, said: “We are obviously delighted to be welcoming Peter to Sefton Central to give us an insight into his life in football in that inimitable Peter Reid style.

”I am sure we will have blues and reds at the event giving Peter a very warm welcome.

“He is a footballing legend and had a long and distinguished career most notably for Everton and he even played for England on 13 occasions”.

Mr Esterson also revealed how he managed to net the booking after chatting to Peter at the Merseyside PFA lunch before the last Merseyside derby.

He explained: “I met Peter when he was the guest speaker with Alan Hansen at that event but this time we’ll have him all to ourselves.

”I told him about the work we were doing in Sefton Central and he was very interested.

“He is originally a Huyton lad and he agreed to come up and be our guest speaker. I know he has a real interest in politics.

”We usually have leading politicians as guest speakers and we will have some of them at the dinner next month, but I hope that having someone who is outside the political scene will attract people to come along and get involved in local politics who may not otherwise think of getting involved.

“It's about engaging people with the political process, which is something which I have been trying to do throughout the constituency as part of my People's Politics Inquiry events.

”I know that we will get a good turn out for Peter Reid and he will get a very warm welcome.“

The event will start at 7.30pm and tickets cost £25 each.
