Kids football team nets £500 grant
by Tom Martin

A CHILDREN'S football team from Netherton has been awarded with a £500 grant from a charity that wants to improve the local area.

South Sefton Borough U11s, who train in Thornton, applied to Star People Awards, after parents successfully claimed that the money would result in positive change for the area.

A national charity group called UnLtd created a ten year plan called Big Local, which will offer grants to organisations and individuals from across England.

And the young football team were successful in their application because parents want their children to focus on sport and not anti-social behaviour.

The club will now be able to buy new kits for the players and some much-needed equipment.

One excited mum, Joanne Brady, said: “The kids play their little hearts out and it's great to see them rewarded for that.

”A lot of the children live in deprived areas so it's important that we educate them and teach lessons about discipline.

“Their attitudes are always brilliant and we just wanted to do something for them so this money will really help.

”I hope people will now look again and think that Netherton is not all bad“.

The team are currently competing in the Walton and Kirkdale Junior Football League.

Another mum, Louise Harper, said: ”There is so much funding available for people and I don't think that they know about it.

“If they do what we did and apply for the grant it can further improve the local area”.

The Star People Awards has three different categories depending on the amount of the grant.

The Try It Awards, which the Netherton team applied for, is support of up to £500 but there are also funds available of up to £5,000 and even £15,000.

The awards motto, states: “We provide an opportunity for individuals not yet used to managing large sums of money or planning larger projects to make their local area a better place.

”The funding enables individuals to progress at their own pace with the right support“.
