Horror crash leaves four in hospital
by Tom Martin

A HORROR crash in Litherland has left four people in need of hospital treatment.

A stolen BMW, which had three people inside, was briefly chased by police on Sunday December, 1, until it collided with a red Vauxhall Astra at the junction of Kirkstone Road North and Church Road.

The incident took place at around 9.30pm and the crash resulted in a nearby garden wall being demolished.

The cars ploughed through the wall and actually hit a house, which caused cracks to the outside of the property and the front windows smashed.

Police were forced to close the busy road in both directions.

The driver of the Astra, a 27-year-old man from the Litherland area, suffered serious facial and arm injuries and has been taken to hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the driver and two passengers in the silver BMW, which is believed to have been stolen in a burglary in Lancashire, also suffered minor injuries.

One of the passenger in the vehicle suffered serious leg and pelvic injuries.

All three men, who are aged 22, 24 and 23, have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and aggravated vehicle taking.

Several minutes before the collision with the Astra, the driver of the BMW had failed to stop for police patrols when signalled to do so and a brief pursuit had ensued.

Due to this prior police contact before the BMW was involved in the crash, the force has voluntarily referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call Merseyside Police's roads policing department or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
