...and volunteers help vulnerable Netherton families
by Tom Martin

VULNERABLE families on low income in Netherton have been delivered a healthy treat by a group of dedicated volunteers.

More than 70 homes in the area were identified as in need of support and hampers full of fruit and vegetables were dished out and delivered to their front doors.

The scheme was a team effort between Netherton Children’s Centre and One Vision Housing.

They wanted to give families a helping hand and the much-needed boost in food came as a pleasant surprise for families during the festive period.

Now in its fourth year of operation, the Hamper Scheme has been a great success within the local community.

Feedback and research has been carried out by Sure Start and revealed that the initiative provides invaluable nutrition for the children’s healthy development.

It also found out that the scheme reduces the pressure of financial burden for worried parents in difficult times.

The Manager of Netherton Children’s Centre, Julie Finch, said: ‘’Our dedicated team here at the children’s centre are all extremely happy and proud to be able to provide this worthwhile service for the local community again this year.

“We greatly appreciate the funding from our partners in the One Vision Group who make it all possible.   The response and overwhelming gratitude we receive from the families makes it all worthwhile’’.

Netherton Children’s Centre is committed in their bid to promote healthy eating lifestyles and provide low cost fruit and vegetables.

They also stage family cookery classes and give support to young children.
