Shots fired at Netherton pub
by Tom Martin

A TROUBLED pub in Netherton was targeted by a gunman who shot through a window – despite it being full of local drinkers.

Merseyside Police were called to Eden Vale, on Glovers Lane, at 10.10pm on Sunday December, 29, after reports that the building was shot at.

No-one was injured but the pub still had staff and customers inside and they were left shocked by the incident.

Officers are now hunting a man, who was described as short, stocky and wearing a blue hooded top, after he fled the scene on foot.

It has also caused alarm for nearby residents and police are in the middle of house-to-house enquiries to provide reassurance to the local community.

Officers are also looking at CCTV footage and police are patrolling the area.

The pub has been cordoned off and Crime Scene Investigators have carried out forensic examinations at the scene.

The window damage has been analysed and it is believed that the weapon used was a shotgun.

A motive for the gun attack is still not clear.

Superintendent Kevin Johnson, said: “To fire a weapon into a pub, where there are likely to be customers, is reckless in the extreme and it is only through sheer good fortune that no-one has been injured.

”We are working hard to establish who the offender is and why he would do this. We will be speaking to as many witnesses as we can to see if they saw or heard anything that could help our investigation.“

The Eden Vale pub was at the centre of an arson attack in September when someone set fire to the front door.

Three fire engines were called as a result of the fire and it caused damage to the foyer and entrance.

The Superintendent added: ”I would like to reassure local people that we will do everything we can to bring the offender to justice.

“The use of firearms on the streets of Merseyside will not be tolerated and we will relentlessly pursue the criminals who use them.”
