New social club for elderly to be launched
by Tom Martin

A COMMUNITY group from Seaforth will set up a new social club for elderly people.

Seaforth Information Network Group (SING Plus), based on Cambridge Road, has been given a £600 grant to buy new microwaves, kettles and toasters.

There are also plans to stage arts and crafts sessions so the cash will be used to buy the needed materials.

SING Plus was set up in 1995 to improve the local area and offer help for residents who suffer from social isolation.

The organisation also has a shop on Seaforth Road for residents looking for computer and information services.

In the past the charity has held fun days, children's Christmas parties and a local talent contest.

John Oldfield, from SING Plus, said: “Social isolation later in life can have a negative impact on people’s lives. The project is aimed at engaging older residents and providing them with a safe environment, where they can meet new friends and enjoy a range of activities. We would like to thank Beech for the funding as we have been able to start the project sooner than expected.”

The grant was dished out by Beech Housing Association and will help the Seaforth community group establish a social club for older people.

Lindsay Greenhalgh, the Beech’s Neighbourhood Development Officer, said: “It is fantastic we have been able to support SING Plus with this project, as it is a real asset to community. So many residents will benefit from this project by either accessing advice or simply having a chat with staff or friends over a pot of tea.”
