Bosses at venue announce concerts for new season

DOUGLAS Music, Parbold, has announced its 41st season with ten concerts during 2014/15 featuring a line-up of renowned artists and a wide-ranging variety of musical styles.

The concerts take place in the Arena Auditorium at Parbold Village Hall, WN8 7DN, and offer a rare opportunity to hear some of today’s greatest musicians in an intimate setting.

The season features outstanding pianists John Lill CBE, Paul Lewis, Anna Fedorova, the much praised improviser-entertainer, Harry the Piano, international concert pianist, Martin Roscoe in a duo with violinist Liza Ferschtman and American Jazz and blues pianist, Charlie Wood with the incomparable Jacqui Dankworth.

All will be playing Douglas Music’s recently acquired 2000 Steinway Concert Grand that has already has a distinguished career at the Barbican Hall, London.

The internationally acclaimed pianist Paul Lewis opens this season on Saturday, September 20, at 7.45p.m., playing Beethoven’s final three sonatas, each with its own personality and full of the characteristics for which Beethoven is so well-loved.

Paul Lewis’s performances of works by Beethoven have received critical and public acclaim worldwide, and confirm him as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of arguably the greatest composer in history.

Award winning Wingates Band, one of the country’s oldest and most famous brass bands, will whisk the audience away to the glamour of Hollywood and the world of cinema with an evening of popular film themes on Saturday, October 11, at 7.45p.m.

On Saturday, November 1, 7.45p.m., John Lill CBE, returns to perform Beethoven, Brahms and Liszt. Unanimously described as the leading pianist of his generation, John Lill's career has taken him to over 50 countries, both as a recitalist and as a soloist with the world's greatest orchestras. He will be playing on the very instrument that he selected for Douglas Music.  He has a longstanding relationship with Douglas Music, always delighting audiences who regularly request to hear him again in Parbold. A spokesman for Douglas Music, Parbold said: “His support during the appeal to purchase a new Steinway grand piano was invaluable.”

Douglas Music welcomes Anthony John Clarke, a talented folk singer, songwriter and guitar player, on Saturday, November 22 at 7.45 pm. Often described as ‘one of the folk scene’s nicest guys’, Anthony John Clarke has devoted fans across the world, all avid followers of his skills as a singer songwriter.

On Saturday, December 13, 7.45p.m., Harry the Piano will put everyone in Christmas mood with his unequalled talent to do ‘absolutely anything on piano'.

In the New Year cellist, on Saturday, January 10 2015, 7.45p.m., Jane Lindsay and pianist, Alison Rhind, will feature the lyrical melodies of Rachmaninov.

Distinguished pianist Martin Roscoe makes a very welcome return to Parbold with Dutch violinist, Liza Ferschtman to perform the perfect blend of romance and drama on Valentine’s day, Saturday, February 14 2015, 7.45pm.

One of the most exciting young Russian pianists, Anna Fedorova performs a rich programme of works by Russian masters, including Mussorgsky’s mighty showpiece, Pictures at an Exhibition on Saturday, March 7 2015, 7.45p.m.

'The classical world’s best known guitar duo’, the Katona Twins, Peter and Zoltán, bring something for everyone in their unique performance, from flamenco to classical to more popular musical genres on Saturday, April 18 2015, 7.45p.m.

The incomparable Jacqui Dankworth and her husband Charlie Wood close the 2014/15 Season on Saturday, May 9 2015, 7.45p.m., with a set of soulful music and songs by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn In Sentimental Mood.

Tickets cost £12, £15 or £18 per concert.
