BOOTLE pupils put down their pens and swapped the classroom for the woods as their survival skills were put to the test.

More than 150 youngsters, from Hillside High School, took part in a number of role play scenarios which included giving first aid and learning to live outdoors.

One of the tasks was centered on a plane crash, with the group being asked to treat the injured pilot and give him urgent medical attention.

The event, held at Cholmondeley Castle, in Cheshire, also saw children build their own shelters in different designs by using pieces of wood found on the ground.

They then had to explain why they had built their shelters in that way and if they thought it was waterproof – and to test their confidence each person was invited to get inside the shelter while a bucket of water as poured over them!

Amanda Ryan, principal at Hillside said: “I am delighted that over 150 Year 7 and 8 students attended the ‘Bushcraft' event. Undoubtedly this experience was pretty grueling for our students and could certainly rival Bear Grylls!

”I am delighted to hear how well our students worked together and formed new friendships. They certainly didn't have the weather on their side and to see how enthusiastic they were on their return to school certainly spoke volumes about their determination and character.

“While the weather wasn’t perfect, our students rose to every occasion, formed new friendships and most importantly worked together as a team. Overall the trip was a huge success and even in the pouring rain, we managed to keep the camp fire burning!”
