End of the line for Pier tram
by Ollie Cowan

SOUTHPORT'S iconic blue pier tram, which features in a number of promotional stills and videos for tourism in the resort, has been scrapped.

The move has been made as part of ongoing council cost cutting measures and rising maintenance costs for the tram, which bosses at Sefton deemed to be too much to maintain.

It also follows major safety concerns in 2013 that the weight and constant wear and tear of the tram on the pier structure could irreparably damage the iconic resort landmark.

The tram will be replaced by the smaller land train which has previously been used to tour the area around Kings Gardens. A route has now been modified to incorporate the length of the pier.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “Due to the costly maintenance of the Pier Tram, it was agreed with the concessionaire to stop running the service.

”The removal of the tram will also help reduce wear and tear on the weathered structure and increase the longevity of the Pier.

“Visitors to the popular Pier can still use the Road Train and an extra new Road Train is expected this summer providing additional trips.”

In 2013 The Champion reported that the pier had to be temporarily closed due to major concerns over the safety of the iron supports beneath the walkway - with wear and tear being attributed to a combination of rusting and the weight of the pier tram.

Half of the Pier was forced to close after a routine inspection found the cracks. The Pier tram was temporarily suspended for safety reasons after 14 columns were identified to have cracks in them. They were later repaired by contractors and the pier was reopened.
