Hillside say hola to old friends!
by Tom Martin

A BOOTLE school has celebrated its ten year anniversary of forming an exchange partnership which has seen their pupils travel to Spain.

In 2005, Hillside High School forged what has become a long lasting connection with Colegio La Reina, based in Malaga, with the two schools swapping pupils twice a year.

Since then, more than 700 youngsters between the age of 13 and 15 have taken part in the scheme, providing them with an opportunity to learn about different cultures.

This partnership has gone from strength to strength and Hillside are looking forward to welcoming the Spanish students from La Reina over to visit them in Bootle later this year.

The Bootle youngsters have already enjoyed their 2015 trip to Malaga when a group of 28 from Hillside set off for a five day visit at the end of May.

The staff and pupils arrived at Málaga Airport and were picked up by the school bus before being taken to their accommodation, Seminario, on top a hill overlooking Málaga.

That afternoon they climbed the 300 steps up to ‘Colegio La Reina’ on the opposite hill and were treated to a welcome show from a group of Spanish students.

For the next five days, each morning Hillside youngsters attended Colegio La Reina and got to know the Spanish students, and on one of the days went to the local water park.

Pupils also spent an afternoon in the centre of Málaga, seeing all the sights and then played some beach football on the Malagueta beach.

On the final day pupils were taken down the coast to Benalmadena, a small resort where they bought souvenors to take home.

Amanda Ryan, principal at Hillside High School said: “We are delighted to have such strong links with Colegio La Reina and every year our students have an unforgettable experience when they get to spend time in Málaga, practising their Spanish and making friendships, which often last a lifetime.

”Staff and students all had a fantastic time and tried lots of new things. It really was an unforgettable five days, and we look forward to seeing some of the Colegio La Reina students back at Hillside later this year.“
