MP had backed church's bid to take on facility
by anon

MP Bill Esterson said he was deeply disappointed that Sefton Council was opting to sell off the former Aintree Library building for development rather than accepting a community bid to take the site on.

Mr Esterson had backed a bid from Aintree Village Family Church to take over the closed down Altway library.

The church had drawn up plans to buy the building and use it as a place of worship with additional community activities, including reinstating a library facility to the Village.

The MP said: “I personally backed Aintree Village Family Church's bid because I felt it was the very best option available to retain the library for community use, with a library service.

”So it is obviously very disappointing to discover that Sefton Council has opted to sell the building and land for housing.

“The community of Aintree Village, and Melling, expressed on mass their wish to save the library when the closure was first muted and since the doors were finally closed in December 2013.

”There is a clear need for a library facility and I felt the church's bid was the one that would be most beneficial to the wider community, particularly in light of their collaborative approach to bidding and running the facility.

“So it is obviously very disappointing that that bid was rejected.”

He added that he believed cuts in government funding to councils were the main reason why the local authority was under financial pressure to close and sell off facilities.
