Linnets victory ahead of the season opener
by Tom Martin

Burscough 4

Marine 1

Burscough rounded off their pre-season fixtures with a convincing victory over Evo Stik Premier League opposition Marine.

Burscough started the match strongly and after a couple of close calls for the Mariners defence they took a deserved lead through Drew Lewis after just five minutes.

It was not all plain sailing for Burscough and the Mariners slowly pulled themselves back into the game, they got their reward after nineteen minutes, when Liam Willis was on hand to side foot

home from Jamie Menagh’s cross.

After this the game settled down to a more even contest with both side finding chances hard to come by.

The second half started in much the same way as the first with strong Burscough pressure and it was no surprise when they regained the lead when Drew Lewis finished smartly from John Connolly’s pass.

This was the turning point in the match and as Marine pressed forward in the 64th minute a long ball from the Burscough defence found Liam Caddick in space, the Burscough man took a touch and made no mistake smashing the ball past a helpless Matt Cooper in the Mariners goal.

By this time the game was effectively over as a contest and Burscough’s victory was complete when Paul Jewell netted from close range in the 71st minute.

Burscough’s season begins this Saturday when they play host to Lancaster City at Victoria Park, kick off 3pm, in what promises to be an early season cracker with both teams having faired well in their pre season build ups.

Managed by former Premier League stars Darren Peacock and Trevor Sinclair, Lancaster will be hoping their experience translates to success on the pitch.

Burscough, however, with Mark Beesley starting his first full season in charge will be buoyed by recent results and will be looking to start the season with a home win before difficult away matches at Osset Albion on Tuesday August, 18, kick off 7.45 pm and Kendall Town on the following Saturday, kick off 3pm.
