Nature reserve to open gates to public this weekend
by Jim Sharpe

THE Gorse Hill Nature Reserve in Aughton is opening its gates to the public this weekend (October 10/11) for their ‘Apple Weekend’ celebrations.

The heritage orchard is part of the 85 acre site set up in 1966 as a charitable trust, developed and managed for the benefit of wildlife.

The orchard itself contains 95 apple trees, along with a few pear and plum trees, with some of the varieties dating back to the 1700s, including such names as Howgate Wonder, Lord Derby and Bramley Seedling as culinary varieties, and Ellison’s Grange an Rosemary Russet as dessert apples.

Reserve Manager Jonathon Atkins from Lydiate said: “We has a very successful weekend last year - our first two-day event - and were blessed with fine weather.

”We’re hoping this year that even more people will find time to visit our working orchard. So far this autumn we’ve had a good crop from our early varieties. We are grateful for the support of the local community and our volunteers.“

Tours of the orchard will be available as well as demonstrations of apple pressing, opportunities to taste and buy both juice and apples. Refreshments will be on sale and new this year is a children’s activity led by a local storyteller.

The reserve is in Holly Lane, off Gaw Hill Lane, Aughton (L39 7HB) and will be open on Saturday 10 an Sunday 11 October from 11am - 4pm. Entry is free but donations are always welcome.
