“The ‘Power of the press’ has certainly brought results, according to Bruce Hubbard, President of the Rotary club of Maghull and Aughton.

The Champion carried a story a couple of weeks ago about Bruce’s efforts to collect no longer needed bras - in order to make money for the Action Against Breast cancer charity - and at the same time provide bras for the women of Africa where bras are apparently in short supply.

”We hoped an article in our local paper would persuade some people to bring along unwanted bras to the ‘Bra Bank’ in Maghull Library,“ Bruce said last week. ”But we never expected the marvellous reaction we actually had!

“Thanks to the Champion, in just a few days we have filled several sacksful. I don’t know how many bras we now have - we measure the success in weight. And at the last count we had something like 20kgs ready for collection by the recycling firm BCR.”

BCR recycle those bras not suitable for new owners (used for industrial cleaning) while those suitable for new owners are shipped to market traders in Africa.

Bruce also wanted sincerely to thank the staff at Maghull Library who have enthusiastically embraced the idea.

“In fact, such has been the runaway success of the library Bra Bank that instead of closing at the end of October as was originally planned, the bank is remaining in operation for an extended period,” he said.

So if you have any unwanted bras, Bruce and his wife, Margaret, would be delighted if you could pop along to the library and increase the weight. BCR pay £1,000 per tonne of bras the charity.
