In-form Linnets target play-off spot
by Tom Martin

BURSCOUGH are targeting promotion after a remarkable run that has been them lose just once in their last 18 games in all competitions.

The Linnets have been in blistering form of late and have set up an exciting second half to the season with fans dreaming of finishing in the play-offs in the Northern Premier League Division One North.

And it's not just their league form which has grabbed attention. They were also scheduled to travel to neighbours Marine last night (Tuesday) in the FA Trophy third qualifying round with the reward for the winners of a home tie in the First Round proper against Conference side Guiseley on Saturday.

Burscough's emergence from mid-table finishers last season - when they ended in 15th place with 48 points - to possible play-off contenders this year is a dramatic rise in fortunes for the club.

After 17 games this term, they sit fourth in the table with 37 points, just 11 shy of their total for the entire 2014/15 campaign.

Their latest success last weekend saw them return from a potentially tricky away clash at Scarborough Athletic with the points, winning 3-0 with goals by Paul Williams, Drew Lewis and Will Jones.

Club secretary, Stan Petherbridge, believes the key to the side's success is the players' attitude and commitment to manager Mark Beesley.

Speaking earlier this week ahead of the Marine fixture, Stan told the Champion: “We have players who are playing for the manager and it's great to see. We face Marine this week who are in the league above us but we are confident.

”Hopefully history will repeat itself because when we beat them in this competition back in 2003 we went on to win it.

“It will be more difficult this time around as the Conference sides take the competition a lot more seriously and they are all full-time.

”If we beat Marine, hopefully we will pull in a decent crowd for Saturday's game against Guiseley and get around 200 fans to the ground.

“In terms of the league, we are doing really well at the moment and we are hoping to get into the play-offs. I think Northwich Victoria will run away with it. They are the best team in the league and will probably win it – but we want to finish in the play-offs.”
