Union stages cuts protest at Concourse
by Henry James

THE public service union, Unison ran a leafleting campaign at the Concourse Shopping Centre in Skelmersdale against the government’s cuts to local authority funding.

The union held the event on Saturday, February 6 and officials were situated on the first floor in the square where Iceland and Superdrug stores are situated.

Elaine Brooks, UNISON assistant branch secretary and lead officer for schools said: “This was a joint effort of UNISON branches in the Lancashire Area. The Lancashire Branch, West Lancs Borough Branch and Police Staff Branch were present on the day - and the aim was to speak to members of the public to make them aware of the consequences of central government cuts to local authority funding.

”This of course will mean that services provided by Lancashire County Council and West Lancs Borough will either be significantly reduced or disappear altogether. The proposal could see 40 of 74 libraries cut in Lancashire.

“We encouraged members of the public to write to their local MPs, County Council and Borough Councillors to ask what they are doing about fighting the cuts being imposed.

”Conservative Government cuts are now so severe that Lancashire county council will not have enough cash by 2018 to run even legally required services. It is not too late for the government to change course, but to make this happen Lancahire's eight Conservative MPs must withdraw their support for these cuts and vote them down.

“It is time for them to say whether they are loyal to Lancashire services or party policy.”
