A LIVERPOOL FC fan from Ormskirk had more than most to celebrate this weekend when she received a personal card from the newly-crowned European champions to mark her milestone 100th birthday!
Originally from Bootle, Edna Wither has lived in the town for more than 60 years and despite her advancing years still enjoys getting out and about, spending time with family and the odd drop of brandy!
She celebrated her birthday at Hurlston Hall on Sunday with more than 75 family and friends, some of whom had travelled from as far afield as the USA, Canada and the Dominican Republic.
And as well as the customary message from the Queen she was delighted to receive a personalised greeting from the ‘kings of Europe’ wishing her all the best and signed by all the players.
Edna moved to Ormskirk after the Second World War during which she met her late husband Fred. She had worked as radio operator during the war informing gunners where enemy aircraft were, while Fred, who came from Scotland, served as a gunner.
The couple had four children and five grandchildren and Edna now has 13 great-grandchildren with another on the way.
She puts her longevity down to ‘luck’ but daughter Carole reckons it could run in the family. “Mum’s father lived to 90 which was a really good age then - so maybe it’s in the genes.”
