THE Stem Cell Scousers are celebrating after reaching the £45,000 mark for fund-raising.
Kevin Dunne and his younger brother Tony, were inspired to set up Stem Cell Scousers in 2015 after the charity Anthony Nolan found a donor for Kevin’s wife in the USA.
The donor saved her life when she was suffering from aggressive leukaemia.
In 2016, Tony was diagnosed with a blood disorder and needed a stem cell transplant but against all the odds - and to the amazement of the doctors - Kevin was a miracle match for Tony... just like an identical twin, even though Kevin is two years older. Kevin then donated his cells and saved Tony’s life.
In the last year alone, the Stem Cell Scousers, which are a Friends of Anthony Nolan group, have organised donor recruitment drives which signed up 496 new donors to the national register.
They hold events across Sefton, including bag packs in supermarkets such as Aldi in Netherton and Tesco in Formby.
Earlier this year, Kevin won a Pride of Formby award for his work raising funds and awareness.
Kevin said: “The Stem Cell Scousers in just four years have now raised an amazing sum of £45,444.19 for blood cancer charities. The Anthony Nolan Trust has received £34,546.13 of that total.
“The Myeloma UK West Lancs and Merseyside Support Group joined the Stem Cell Scousers last year and have helped at numerous fundraising events.”
Lawrie Mallyon from Anthony Nolan added: “We are amazed by the tireless fundraising and awareness of the Anthony Nolan Charity that the Stem Cell Scousers are doing for us and all the political support they have gained for the Anthony Nolan in the Merseyside area.
Singer Nuala Nuxbury, who is a member of the Stem Cell Scousers, will hold a fundraising event for Myeloma UK at Enelle’s Glass House on Lord Street in Southport on Thursday, July 4, from 7-11pm. She is holding it in memory of her father Arthur Magennis, who passed away in February 2018 from multiple myeloma, a very rare blood cancer.
Advance tickets can be bought from Enelle’s Glass house for £3, which includes nibbles, on 01704 634779.”
