BOOTLE-born footballer Alex Greenwood has joined French champions Lyon after they agreed a £36,900 fee with Manchester United.
The 25-year-old defender was the captain of the Red Devils and helped them gain promotion to the Women’s Super League last season.
Lyon are widely considered one of the best ladies teams in the world and in May they beat Barcelona 4-1 to win their fourth consecutive Women’s Champions League title.
Greenwood said: “So excited to be joining Lyon, the best women’s club in the world and to test myself against the best players every day. Excited for the journey ahead.”
Greenwood has 41 England caps and scored in the last-16 tie against Cameroon at the Women’s World Cup this summer.
She will join her international teammates Lucy Bronze, Nikita Parris and Izzy Christiansen at the French champions.
The former Savio Salesian College pupil grew up supporting Liverpool but was signed by rivals Everton where she played for 14 years and went through the youth set-up before making the switch to Notts County in 2013 and then joining the Reds a year later.
