SOUTHPORT Pier has been named as one of a number of coastal heritage sites across England to benefit from a slice of £40 million government funding.
A new lick of paint, better lighting and even a helter-skelter will be added to the iconic structure as part of a new series of works designed to bring more footfall to the pier.
Money will also be set aside to set up a new ‘visitor welcome team’ who will encourage more people to come and enjoy the attractions along the mile long pier.
Bird watchers will also be encouraged to use the structure as a vantage point to observe wildlife on the sands.
The money will now be added to funding already set aside by Sefton Council for the much needed Pier restoration project announced earlier this year.
Additional planned works will include extensive structural repairs, improvements to the end pavilion, the creation of new retail units, easier access to the beach, and improvements to the railings on Marine Lake.
The overall project will deliver over £2.9 million worth of improvements creating additional jobs, increasing visitor numbers and securing Southport Pier as a valued asset for many years to come. Cont. inside From page 1
Phil Cresswell, Head of Regeneration and Housing, said: “The grant will allow us to deliver significant improvements with added features and attractions, along with better accessibility for more people to enjoy the Pier.
“The Pier project is included as part of the Southport Development Framework, receiving this grant enables us to make a start and attract further inward investment, this shows that Sefton is open for business with a continued focus on growing the visitor economy.”
A spokesperson for the Department for Communities and Local Government added: “Communities up and down the coast are set to benefit from a £40 million cash boost as piers, promenades and coastal paths are some of over 30 exciting new projects set to create new jobs, attract tourists and boost economic growth for their local areas.
“The funding is helping coastal tourism regain its position as England’s largest holiday sector.”
