Rotary District Governor for 2020/21 begins role

by Danielle Thompson (June 2020)

A Maghull and Aughton Rotarian has been named Rotary District Governor for 2020/21.

David Hartley takes up the post today (July 1), which is the start of the new Rotary year.

He joined the Rotary more than 20 years ago when he was invited by the then-President of Southport Rotary, Royston Furley. Since then, David has been in three other Clubs due to moving with his Post Office business. Currently, he and his wife Yvonne own Bispham Road Post Office in Southport.

He was President of Southport Meols in 2014/15 and is now a member of Maghull and Aughton Rotary.

The Rotary International theme for 2020/21 is ‘Rotary Opens Opportunities’ which David says has certainly found to be true throughout his time in the organisation.

Whilst in San Diego in January, David met with over 500 District Governor Elects from all over the world as well as 60 Rotaractors - 18-35 year old young Rotarians.

David said: “I will probably be the least travelled Governor in history due to the pandemic, but as long as everyone is safe it doesn’t matter. As dreadful as COVID-19 is, it has opened our eyes to the opportunities that we see in front of our eyes.”
