‘IT’S Behind You’ – that’s the message from Southport Lifeboat, who have launched a new beach safety campaign helping members of the public to stay safe when visiting Southport.
A combination of nice weather, more people visiting the resort’s coastline along with a lack of RNLI Lifeguard cover on Southport beach this summer, has led to volunteer crews being called out more than ever before.
The campaign has been created to highlight the dangers of the coast and to provide safety advice.
A Southport Lifeboat spokesperson, said: “Earlier this year, our crew helped more than 40 people who had become cut off by the tide at Southport in one incident.
“Last week, we rescued two teenagers who were minutes away from the sandbank they were trapped on, being completely covered by the tide.
“When you’re at the beach, check to see whether the water has crept behind you while you’re relaxing on the beach.
“If you get into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
