Landslip caused by flood waters causes temporary rail line closure

Landslip caused by flood waters causes temporary rail line closure

by Danielle Thompson (October 2020)

A LANDSLIP caused the  rail line between Wigan and Southport to be temporarily closed, following a day of disruption caused by flooding.

Heavy rain, falling on already sodden ground resulted in fast-moving floods on Wednesday, October 6. As the network was beginning to recover from the flooding, a new landslip near Burscough Bridge meant that it was impossible to operate trains between Wigan Wallgate and Southport.

The line was closed on Wednesday, October 7 but it reopened to normal service on Thursday, October 8.
