A husband and wife team from Ainsdale have turned a former sandwich bar in Southport town centre into a dog grooming salon.
Neil and Martha Prior have set-up Martha’s Groomies, on Shakespeare Street, with both providing their own unique set of skills to contribute to the business.
Martha, who during lockdown achieved qualifications in dog grooming, looks after the furry clients, while Neil is a professional dog artist and has created an exhibition inside the salon!
Neil explains: “During lockdown we found a premises on Shakespeare Street that we set about turning in to a dog grooming salon, designing, refurbishing and kitting it out with all the essential dog grooming facilities.
“As the pandemic came upon us, the both of us made the decision for Martha to up her grooming qualification to enable her to groom independently and during lockdown she achieved the level 3 status and subsequently started working from home prior to the opening of the salon which now has a doggy client base of 40 plus.
“I don’t get involved with the grooming but help as Martha’s assistant, washing the dogs and sweeping up! However, as a professional dog artist, a section of the salon is dedicated to a gallery of my paintings, prints and greeting cards of a number of local dogs that I have painted in oils.
“Martha and I have a love of dogs that came about four years ago when we became owners of two Bedlington Terriers, Bruce and Herbert, and since then haven’t looked back.”
Martha runs a Bedlington Terrier group and Herbert is starring as a model to be groomed in the up and coming semi final of the new TV show Pooch Perfect, to be aired on BBC1 at 8pm on Thursday 25th February.
Neil added: “As you can imagine we are really excited about seeing how Herbert behaves for the grooming contestant in this semi final event!”
