MOVING tributes have been paid to two elderly friends who were killed after they were hit by a car in Birkdale.

Enquiries into the tragedy are ongoing, say Mereyside Police, and they have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information to call them.

The pensioners, Marie Cunningham, 79, and Grace Foulds, 85, were walking on Lulworth Road on Tuesday, November 30 at around 5pm when they were struck by a white Audi A3.

Members of the public gave them first aid before paramedics arrived to take the women  to hospital, where they sadly passed away.

The driver stopped at the scene and is assisting police with enquiries.

A family tribute for Marie, read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our special mum, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunty, Marie (Mary) Cunningham.

“Marie was an amazing person who lived for and loved her family and will be missed every day. Our family would like to thank the members of the public who stopped to give first aid and assistance to Marie and Grace at the time of the incident.” Continued p5

“Grace, who lived on Palatine Road, was a popular member of the Birkdale community as well as a regular at St Joseph’s Church. She will be sadly missed by all her family and many friends.

“Our family wish to pass their thanks to the emergency services and staff at Southport Hospital.”

Sergeant Mat Shaw from Merseyside Police, said: “An investigation has been launched into this tragic incident and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision.

“Similarly, if you were driving in the Lulworth Road area at the time and have any dashcam footage, please review it and get in touch if you see anything. Information you hold could be vital our enquiries.”
