CAMPAIGNERS say it was an “emotional experience” after new water fountains were switched on in the lake at Botanic Gardens in memory of Ben Smith-Crallan.
It has long been the ambition of the Make a Change for Botanic group to install new fountains following the death of Ben, who died at the age of 37 after accidentally falling into the lake, which resulted in him getting a rare infection.
After tireless fundraising, driven by Ben’s friend David Rawsthorne, the new lake features have now been officially switched on in front of friends, family and park volunteers.
David said: “I’d like to thank every single person who has backed our campaign and who donated. The whole Southport community can be proud of themselves. On a personal level, it’s been extremely cathartic for me to have achieved this in the memory of a truly irreplaceable best friend.
“Whilst I’ll carry him in my heart everyday for the rest of my life, I feel these fountains can represent something positive coming from his tragic and untimely death and myself and Ben’s family can take some comfort from them.
“I would like the local community to refer to the fountains as ‘Ben’s fountains of hope’.”
It’s not the end of the campaigning, as Make a Change for Botanic is still trying to raise enough money to get the lake dredged and properly cleaned.
