Tee-riffic! Greenkeeper turns around golf club’s fortunes

A GOLF course near Skelmersdale once called ‘the worst in the UK’ is now enjoying a growing reputation for the quality of its course with membership booming.

Beacon Park Golf Club in Up Holland came under fire in the past over landfill issues and a website described it as ‘the worst course in the UK’ back in 2020.

But bosses at the club say it is now fighting back thanks to the efforts of head greenkeeper, Peter Lawton, who was recruited in 2021.

Mark Snaylam, contract manager for Serco Leisure who manage the course said: “Peter and his team of assistant greenkeepers have worked wonders on the course. The definition is back on the fairways and the greens look fantastic.

“Peter created a maintenance plan, with regular mowing regimes, weed and pest control, and regular aeration to the greens.

“The first tee is growing in and we’re looking ahead to when we’ll be able to open that up for players. We’ve seen both casual and membership numbers grow compared to pre-pandemic levels, with the course enjoying a rapidly improving reputation among visiting players.”

In April, Beacon  Park Golf Club was nominated at the England Golf Awards 2022 in the category Sustainability Project of the Year.

The awards noted how investment in fresh equipment and greens in 2021 has ‘encouraged former members to return and new golfers to arrive offering hope for the future.’
