Greenwood aiming for Euros glory with Lionesses

by Tom Martin (July 2022)

SEFTON-born Lioness Alex Greenwood is aiming for a place in the final when England take on Sweden tomorrow night (Tuesday) in the Women's Euro 2022.

England will face Sweden in the semi-final at Brammall Lane, in Sheffield, for a place in the final when they could play either Germany or France.

Greenwood, who was born in Bootle, is making her fourth apperance at a major tournament for England - having represented her country at the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and the 2017 Euros, where England reached three successive semi-finals.

The 28-year-old defender will be hoping to do one better this time around and beat Sweden to help the Lionesses reach a women's major tournament final for the first time since 2009.

Greenwood was an 82nd minute substitute during England’s quarter-final victory over Spain, which was her 63rd cap for the national team.

She started her career at Everton and was named FA Young Player of the Year at the age of 18.

After Everton were relegated at the end of the 2014 season, Greenwood joined Notts County on a two-year deal.

At the start of 2016, she joined Liverpool - where she played for two years – and was named in the FA Women’s Super League (WSL) Team of the Year in 2015/16.

Moving to Manchester United in 2018, Greenwood captained the Red Devils as they won promotion to the WSL in their debut season as a team.

She then moved abroad and signed for Lyon, where she helped them secure a quadruple - including fulfilling her dream of winning the Champions League.

She signed for Manchester City in 2020 - winning the FA Women's Cup at the end of the 2019/20 season.

Greenwood is in a relationship with Sheffield United defender Jack O'Connell, who once played for Litherland Remyca during his early playing days.
