Patients are waiting ‘longer than ever’ for treatment at Trust hospitals, says MP

AS many as 13,000 people are waiting for NHS treatment at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust, according to latest figures - with 289 waiting for more than a year.

West Lancashire Labour MP Rosie Cooper, hit out at the figure, telling the Champion: “Record numbers of people across the country are waiting for care and they are waiting longer than ever before, often in pain and distress, with nearly 300 patients waiting more than a year for treatment at Southport and Ormskirk.

“Health care staff at Southport and Ormskirk worked heroically throughout the pandemic, but they have been stretched like never before.”

She claimed: “A decade of Conservative mismanagement left the NHS wanting and inadequate when Covid struck, and patients are now left to wait too long as a result.

A spokesperson for Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust said: “Like most hospitals, we have seen waiting times increase over the past three years because of the impact of Covid-19.

“Among trusts of our type in Cheshire and Merseyside, we have the fewest patients waiting more than 52 weeks for planned care. We also are only one of seven trusts in England with no one waiting more than two years.”

Anne-Marie Stretch, managing director of Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, added: “We’re sorry for the inconvenience these delays cause but we continue to work hard getting patients seen as quickly as possible based on their clinical priority.”
