Community cafe set for relaunch next month
by David Simister

A COMMUNITY-LED cafe in the heart of Parbold is on track to reopen next month following an extensive renovation, the group which runs it has told The Champion.

Work on the Pear Tree, a cafe run by the village's youth club, is going well and should open in the first week of July, youth leader Tim Cornah said yesterday (June 21).

“The refurbishment work on the community café in Parbold is now nearing its completion, with an opening date of the first week in July 2011. The project is intended to trade to raise money to pay for the youth centre for Parbold Youth Club and support other charitable activities.

”The café has had complete make-over, inside and out and is being transformed into a place that we really hope the village and surrounding areas will be very proud of.“

Earlier this month The Champion revealed that the refurbishment of the cafe, which first opened in 2009, has been made possible by the financial support of a businessman living in the village, who will also be helping to provide the venture with supplies of coffee when it reopens.

Mr Cornah added:

”I have never seen generosity on this scale before. In a time of deep recession, for a local businessman to be supporting us in this way is truly staggering and a very humbling experience.“

The cafe, which was initially instigated to fill the gap left by a number of cafes and shops which closed during the recession, is run by the youth club's members and sells low cost food and drink, with any profits being put back into the youth club's other ventures and activities.

The cafe, which is situated on Station Road, is expected to reopen to the public in the first week of July. For more information about the site and the other activities of Parbold Youth Club visit their website online at www.3rd-way.com
