Hall's winter secrets unveiled
by David Simister

STAFF at an historic old home in Rufford will be putting the house to bed next week when they get to work making sure the site is ready for the winter.

The National Trust said that next week staff at Rufford Old Hall will be working harder than ever as they prepare the Tudor building - and the centuries old artefacts inside it - for closure, which it says requires a lot of painstaking work until now unseen by visitors.

But on November 5 and 6, after Rufford finally closes for the season, visitors can come in and take a special look ‘behind the scenes’ as staff and volunteers begin their winter preparations.

Lynn Mills, house manager at Rufford Old Hall, said:

“Putting the house to bed is how we describe it. At the end of October we have time to clean the house, carefully wrap up our precious objects and collections, and literally ‘put them to bed’ for the winter.

”We'll be demonstrating how we go about checking inventories, cleaning the silver, polishing the furniture and generally packing things away. Items from suits of armour, to parasols and hats, the Dolls' House and ceramics will all be on our list. We have to use special tools and techniques as some of the items are very rare and precious, and don’t respond well to a burst of 21st century spray cleaner.“

The ‘Putting the House to Bed’ tours take place at Rufford on Saturday, November 5 and Sunday, November 6, between 1pm and 3pm. Tickets, which include the cost of refreshments, cost £8.50, with booking ahead on 01704 821254.

Rufford Old Hall is open Saturdays and Wednesdays until October 30, between 11am and 5pm. For details go to www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ruffordoldhall
