by Henry James

BIRCH Green Amateur Boxing Club are to hold a night out for men and women at Up Holland Labour Club.

The event to raise money for club funds will take place on Friday, May 4 and starts at 7.30pm.

On the night people will be able to see the impressionist Les Gibson, who came third in Britain's Got Talent 2011, The Spies who play music from the 70s and 80s, and Paul McCoy who won Stars In Their Eyes in 1987 as Gilbert O'Sullivan.

There will also be a three course meal.

For more information call Bobby Givnan on 07769945024.

Birch Green Amateur Boxing Club opened last October. They offer classes three nights a week, for all ages, on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The classes are run by head coach Colin Day, and he is helped by his son Colin junior, and Steve Mooney, who is a coach as well.

The original Birch Green Boxing Club closed 20 years ago. It was Colin Day's idea to reopen it again. The gym is now based at the Heversham gym in the former Heversham Meeting Rooms, which was given to the club by the council for the next 35 years on a reduced rental.

Boxer Jimmy Lloyd who won a Bronze Medal in the Welterweight class at the Olympics in 1960 in Rome is a member.

Secretary of the club, Bobby Givnan, said: “We aim to teach people to box under the ABA rules.

”Classes cost £1 a session for children and £2 for adults.

“We are looking forward to the future.”
