McDonald's linked to former Little Chef site
by David Simister

ONE of the world's biggest fast food chains is thought to be behind a bid to reopen a former West Lancashire restaurant which closed earlier this year.

A planning application has been submitted to the borough council this week to turn the now-closed Little Chef in Bickerstaffe from its former use as a restaurant to a restaurant and takeaway, which requires a different type of planning permission.

Although the documents submitted to the local authority do not reveal the identity of the takeaway proposed for the Skelmersdale site, the applicant has been involved in similar applications for sites in Morecambe, Bath, Camarthen and Stockport among others, which have all been for McDonalds branches.

The fast food outlet already operates restaurants in nearby Skelmersdale, adjacent to the Concourse Shopping Centre, and at the Two Saints retail park in Ormskirk.

The Champion approached McDonalds for a comment but it was unable to confirm or deny whether it had any plans for the Bickerstaffe site before this week's edition went to press.

Little Chef closed its restaurant at the site, which is on the main Ormskirk to St Helens road and close to the M58, in January this year after the troubled chain announced it would be closing 67 sites nationwide in response to the weak economy.
