Foodbank volunteers hailed for 'valuable service to community'
by Tom Martin

THE hard work and commitment of volunteers who help run the four Sefton foodbanks were celebrated at a special event in Litherland.

More than 100 people attended the ‘My Part in the Bigger Picture’ event at Linacre Mission, which also saw appearances from the Mayor and Mayoress of Sefton, Cllr Kevin Cluskey and Mrs Linda Cluskey, who presented certificates.

The work of foodbank voucher holders, who are frontline professionals who identify people in crisis who could benefit from foodbank support, was also recognised.

The event was organised by Sefton Foodbank Network, a forum which supports the charity’s work to tackle food poverty in the borough.

The event included entertainment from musical duo the Rag-Tag Misfits, who are currently on tour busking in every county in England to highlight the issue of food poverty and raise funds for the Trussell Trust.

Guests were also given the chance to experience life on the other side of the foodbank counter by tasting samples of good-quality, low-cost meals that can be prepared using ingredients from the food parcels.

Meanwhile, guest speakers at the event included Southport Foodbank Chair, Revd Malcolm Hathaway, who talked about the need for foodbanks in Sefton and how the borough’s churches are responding to this important issue.

Cllr Paul Cummins, Chair of Sefton Foodbank Network, said: “This event was a great opportunity to say thank you to all those people who help the foodbanks to provide this valuable service to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

”We were very pleased with the turnout of volunteers and voucher holders which helped to highlight the importance of team work in addressing the pressing issue of food poverty in the borough.“
