A BOOTLE school has played host to the annual Big Book Quiz which involves students battling it out to see who has the best knowledge of different novels.

Hillside High School held the event last Thursday as different schools from across Sefton gathered to answer a range of questions about modern literature.

The first heats of the competition were held around Lancashire and Greater Manchester before the final heat was hosted for the first time ever in Merseyside, with Hillside being chosen as the venue.

Some of those who got involved where from Chesterfield High School, Presfield High School and Archbishop Beck Catholic Sports College.

The overall winners were Hillside's own Year 7 team ‘Book Hunters Collide’, which consisted of Myriam Leonard, Madison Fairchild, Erin McCardle, John McGarvey and Teigan Grogan.

The five pupils will now go to Wigan in July to compete in the Big Book Quiz final.

Amanda Ryan, principal at Hillside said: “We were honoured to be asked to host the first ever Merseyside Big Book Quiz.

”We were delighted to welcome students from Chesterfield High School and Archbishop Beck to compete with Hillside students in the quiz.

“It was an absolute delight to watch students compete in this competition, whilst enjoying some wonderful entertainment and performances from Hillside's older students.

”Hillside had the added accolade of one of our teams winning and they will now compete in the final in Wigan. I wish them the best of luck, as we take on the rest of the North West“
