Town wide reunion to raise funds for memory loss charity
by Tom Martin

A DAUGHTER is holding a school reunion for Netherton pupils in the hope of raising money for charity in memory of her mum and dad.

Julie Lawson has organised the upcoming event so adults who used to attend schools across the town can catch up and enjoy an evening of entertainment.

The idea is for it to double up as a fundraiser in memory of Julie's parents, Joan and Jack Platt, who both passed away last year after suffering from Alzeimer's disease and died only seven weeks apart.

Joan and Jack, who both lived in Netherton for 60 years, have inspired Julie to embark on a charity mission to raise as much money as possible for the Alzheimer's Society.

She has organised a number of fundraisers over the past year and to date she has raised more than £10,000 in total.

The school reunion will be held at St Benet's Social Club on Saturday, November 21 from 7.30pm and will feature a Tom Jones tribute act and a disco.

Julie said: “Last year I organised a school reunion in aid of the Alzheimer's Society but it was just for former pupils of St Catherine's High School. We raised £300 which was great but this one is going to be a lot bigger because it's for people who attended any of the schools in Netherton.

”Netherton used to have so many schools in the 1970s and 1980s and it was a big area for pupils. We are expecting local people to attend and also there are others travelling all the way from Scotland. We also have six teachers who have confirmed they are going to come.

“The ticket price of £7 will cover the cost of hiring entertainment and the venue but anything else will go towards the Alzheimer's Society. My mum and dad were from the area and knew a lot of people so maybe some of them will come to this event and show their support.”

To buy tickets, visit St Benet's Social Club or call Julie on: 07723 382 553.
