Traders to help homeless on Christmas Eve
by Tom Martin

SELFLESS traders and volunteers from Litherland will spend their Christmas Eve helping the homeless by walking around the city centre to hand out food and clothing.

A group of around 30 people will meet up on Thursday, December 24 on Bold Street and will then walk across town to offer homemade soup, mince pies and woolly hats to those living on the streets.

Some of those getting involved includes Bridge Road shop owners Paula James, who runs PJ's Kitchen, and Niki Mckeown, who runs Homemade Cheesecakes.

They will be joined by other staff members and volunteers, including Michael Goodwin, who is the organiser of a local charity called Helping the Homeless.

Paula told the Champion: “We will go into town at around lunchtime. Michael helps homeless people quite a lot so we will meet up with him on Bold Street and then work our way towards Church Street. We will be helping anyone we happen to come across.

”We will have homemade soup, rolls and Niki from Homemade Cheescakes is making mince pies. This is something that I've always wanted to do but always seem to have other commitments.

“With the shop I can also use it to store donated items. Any customers who want to donate clothing for the homeless we can then keep it in the store until Christmas Eve.

”I've also been speaking with customers all the time about it so hopefully we can raise some awareness and get as much hats, scarves and gloves as possible for those who need it most.“
